SUMMARY:

An outline of the process for custom tee shirt printing on white or light colour t-shirts using t-shirt transfers. It elaborates on some ideas of the possibilities as well as the positives and negatives of this approach.

T-shirt transfer printing refers to the method of printing your graphic/photo/text or any kind of image onto a t-shirt using either a color laser or an inkjet printer. There are different ways to achieve this however we are going to concentrate on using tee shirt transfers.

This process starts by using tee shirt transfer paper. This is a special, coated paper that is made specifically to be printed on and then pressed onto the tee shirt. There are two basic types of this paper; one for printing on white and light coloured fabrics and another for printing on black or any other dark color shirts.

This is the same process where you can purchase t-shirt transfer paper at places like Staples and Wal-Mart, etc. and then press it onto the t-shirt yourself. The difference is, good t-shirt printers use high grade transfer paper and apply the transfers to the t-shirts using a commercial heat press. This combination plus the expertise of the t-shirt printer gives an excellent looking and durable t-shirt

There are numerous pros and a few cons to digital custom tee shirt printing using transfers.

The first benefit is that if you need one unique or simply a few then this method is perfect. You make only what you need. Many tshirt printing processes such as screen printing require a minimum number of shirts.

The next advantage is that you can have full color printing. Since your design is printed with an inkjet or a color laser you are able to have as many colors as you like. This will allow for photos or graphics with gradient fills (blending from one color or shade to another color or shade) to easily be used.

Third. There is no setup involved. Unlike screen printing there is no additional preparation needed in the printing of digital t-shirt transfers. You simply adjust your image to the size you want on the t-shirt. You then “mirror” or “flip” your images so that when it is pressed onto the t-shirt it will be correct. Then print.

And probably one of the best benefits to this form of tee shirt printing is that the t-shirts can easily be personalized.

If you want personalized t-shirts for a wedding you can make a shirt for the bride, another for the mother of the bride, one for the maid of honour and some for the bridesmaids and any other members of the party.

If you have a team you can print your team logo on the chest of the t-shirts and then each players name and their number on the back.

Or if you operate a business and you want your logo printed with the persons name or position incorporated into the logo, this is easy to do.

Now, the biggest disadvantage is that there is no white ink in this process. So, if you were to print the Canadian flag on a light blue t-shirt the flag would be red and light blue instead of red and white. However, there is a t-shirt transfer paper designed especially for printing on dark t-shirts that solves this problem.

Another negative is that if they a not washed properly, the image can fade. The easiest way to avoid this is to turn the t-shirt inside out and wash the t-shirt in cold water with a mild detergent, no bleach or bleach additives or fabric softener. Then hang the t-shirt to dry.

Now I would like to mention that in this article I have often compared t-shirt transfer printing to screen printing. Screen printing has two advantages. You can use white ink and the ink used in screen printing is especially made for fabric.

To sum it up, printing white or light color t-shirts with t-shirt transfers as the tee shirt printing method allows for flexibility and cost effectiveness for printing t-shirts that require multiple colors, personalization or simply a few shirts.

Tee Shirt Printing – Do It Your Self

Your first consideration is what color of t-shirts will you be using for your tee shirt printing? There are no major issues when using white tee shirts.

However, when you are doing tee shirt printing on light color shirts consider that there is no white ink in your printer therefore if you had a picture with three people that are wearing white t-shirts and there were white clouds in the sky then each of the white areas in the photo would be the same color as the t-shirt . If you have light blue tee shirts then the tee shirts on the people in your photo and the clouds would be light blue.

Another issue to think about when tee shirt printing on light color tee shirts is the ink from your printer and the t-shirt colour will to some extent blend together. One time I printed light blue ink on bright yellow t-shirts. That part of the shirt turned greenish. This is like when we were young and would color with red crayons and yellow crayons to get orange. This only happens when tee shirt printing with lighter ink colours on bright light coloured t-shirts. The shading is not usually significant but it is something to be aware of. Darker ink colors are really not affected.

The tee shirt transfer paper you would buy would be for white or light color tee shirt printing. If you prefer to print on black or any dark t-shirt you would need to buy tee shirt transfer paper specifically designed for tee shirt printing on dark colors.

Printing your transfers can be done with an inkjet or a laser printer. But, before you print your transfer you must flip the image backwards so that when it is printed it will view correctly. With some software programs this is a piece of cake since they have a “mirror” or “flip” setting. With software programs such as Word this is normally a little more difficult. To be certain that you have successfully reversed the image, print a copy and put it in front of a mirror. This is how it will print on your tee shirt printing project.

To get the best look for your tee shirt printing you need to be sure to set your printer to the right paper setting. Usually, you’ll set it to heavy or card stock.

To achieve a better print you need to trim away the area of the image that is not needed. For example; if you had a picture of our planet and “Earth Day” in writing directly below it, you would trim around the outside of all of the printed area. Often with t-shirt transfers there is a a yellowish hue around the image. This is from the coating on the transfer paper that adheres the ink to the shirt.

When tee shirt printing, a good t-shirt printer will cut away this excess but even more importantly will have a printer/t-shirt transfer combination that when the tee shirt is printed the unprinted parts are essentially transparent and not an issue.

When it comes to pressing your transfer onto the shirt, if you are using a hand iron you need to follow the instructions to get the best results for you tee shirt printing.

When I first began making t-shirts back in the ’90s it took eleven minutes of pressing time with an iron and even then about half of the shirts still had ink left on the paper. Because the tee shirt printing results weren’t to my satisfaction I purchased a heat press. A heat press is a machine designed specifically for custom tee shirt printing. You can choose the desired temperature you want and then press for the number of seconds called for.

The heat press that I and many other professional t-shirt printers use allows the temperature, time and pressure to be set. This gives an awesome looking tee shirt printing result time after time.

Just as a note, the transfer paper that is used by professional t-shirt printers need to be pressed on with a commercial heat press. You are not able to iron these transfers on.

The materials that you’ll need to make your custom printed tshirts besides a computer and a printer, naturally will be tee shirts. You’ll probably want to use either 100% cotton t-shirts that are preshrunk or 50/50 t-shirts.

You’ll also need tee shirt transfer paper for your different tee shirt printing projects. You can purchase this specialty paper at places like Office Depot, Staples, Office Max, craft stores like Michael’s and Wal-Mart. If you have an inkjet printer be sure to get paper for an inkjet printer and likewise if you have a laser printer.

Read the tee shirt printing guidelines that come with your transfer paper. The closer you follow the instructions the better your finished tee shirt printing will look.

To sum things up, designing and printing your own custom shirts is not only enjoyable but it gives you the added ability to make personalized t-shirts.

There are websites that allow you to create you own designs online or you can take one of your computer software programs and design it on your home computer.

Tee Shirt Printing Photos

If you are adding photos to you’ll want to use a resolution of about 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the full printing size. If you aren’t sure what this is about then do a print of your image on a piece of paper and see if your image looks clear.

You likely already have a program on your computer that will get you going with your tee shirt printing.

I’ve had designs sent to me in Word, Power Point, Illustrator, Excel, Publisher Corel Draw, jpegs, bmps, pdf, Photo Shop, eps, virtually every format there is. So use what you have to design your tee shirt printing project.

If you decide to have a tee shirt printer do your tee shirt printing, be sure to let them know all of the particulars they’ll need to know to give you a quote. They will need to know what you want printed, where you want the printing, the color of the shirts, how many shirts you’d like, the postal code where you live and when you would need the shirts. This will allow them to give you an accurate quote.

T-shirt printers can purchase the supplies they need from wholesalers and in bulk so it is likely that your t-shirts can be made for less or about the same as you could produce the tee shirt printing yourself.

You will get better quality printed tshirts from a good commercial printer since the norm is to use quality t-shirts such as Gildan “Ultra” or similar for their tee shirt printing and as I mentioned before the t-shirt transfer paper is a commercial grade and it is applied to the t-shirt using a commercial heat press which would be set to the recommended amount of heat, time and pressure creating excellent tee shirt printing results.

1. How many T-shirts do you need?

Some companies have minimum orders, especially when it involves screen printing. For printing using t-shirt transfers (what we refer to as Process 1 and Process 2) and some other printing methods, there is no minimum however the cost per t-shirt of just one or a few t-shirts is higher than say ordering say a dozen or more.

2. What colour of T-shirts are you looking for?

Please be aware that printing on white and light colour t-shirts is relatively easy, however printing on black or any dark colour shirts can have minimums and restrictions.

White t-shirts cost less than any colour t-shirt at the wholesale level. It also allows for several printing methods to be used so therefore printing on white tee shirts should give you the best cost.

Printing on light colour shirts also allows for several different printing options. However, the cost of printing the same artwork on a light blue shirt is more expensive then on a white shirt.

When printing on mid colour to dark colour t-shirts the printing methods available are more restrictive and this can lead to higher costs per shirt. Now if you are ordering large quantities the can become the most cost effective way to print the shirts.

3. Where would you like the printing on the T-shirt?

The size of the image or printing or whether the shirt need to be flipped over for 2-sided printing will have an impact on the cost of each shirt so your t-shirts Canada printer will need to know where you want the printing placed.

• On the front left chest area?

• Large across the chest?

• Large on the back?

• Or a combination.

• The left chest area and large on the back or

• Large on the front and on the back

Actually you can have your printing placed almost anywhere on the t-shirt but these are just some guidelines.

4. By what date do you need your T-shirts?

Many custom tee shirts printing companies keep a supply of t-shirts on hand. However frequently they need to order the shirts in the sizes and colours you need from their wholesalers. There are other supplies needed as well so by providing a date that you need your shirts by will ensure that your t-shirts Canada provider can meet your deadline.

5. Do you have any special instructions?

If you are inquiring about getting personalized t-shirts for a wedding party with “Bride, Groom, Mother of the Bride etc” on the t-shirts or baseball shirts with a name and number on the back you would need to include this information.

In fact, just include any instructions that will help you quote be accurate.

6. Your postal code or zip code will help determine the best shipping method and the tax rate for your order.

T-shirts Canada orders can be shipped to any location in Canada that Canada Post delivers. By submitting your postal code the cost and time in transit is calculated. Also the tax rate of either GST or HST can be applied. Naturally orders can be shipped via courier as well.

7. Attach your image to your e-mail request.

It is always best to attach any artwork regardless of the t-shirt colour.

For black or any dark shirts we and your t-shirt printer must see your image to give you a quote.

Once you have answered these questions and submitted them to your t-shirt printer, they will normally get back to you with a quote, a time-frame and a mock-up. From there you can decide whether or not you want to proceed with the company.

If you are the school principal, teacher or administrator who oversees the promotion and/or commemoration of your drama department productions, plays, musicals or your music department, band, choir or glee club at your school or academy and you are interested in tee shirt printing for your project, we can probably help.

Please note that if you are doing a play or musical such as Beauty & the Beast you must have the right to allow us to print these shirts for you. It is usually part of the package you purchase when you obtain the rights to present the musical. These shirts were printed using what we call Process 1.

These shirts were made for Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts’s (Mississauga, ON) production of Beauty and the Beast. They supplied their image with their logo for the front of the shirts and the cast members names and the academy’s logo and website.

Another example of custom printed tshirts was for a school north of Toronto. This design was done by one of the students for their musical production of Aladdin. They ordered 50 shirts so these shirts were screen printed (our Process 3).

A Childrenls Theatre group in Saint John had us print their poster on black t-shirts. We used our Process 2 printing for these shirts.

This design was submitted by a music school. They did a cute modification of using headphones shaped into a heart.

Frequently we receive requests for a custom printed t-shirts quote and the image and text is created in Microsoft Word. This can be an issue if your custom T-shirt design contains particular fonts and they are important to your design and the fonts are not embedded in your file.

For example, let’s say that you used the font  . Now if I don’t have  the font on my computer the font will display as or  , defaulting to a common font on my computer.

There are thousands of available fonts and I have more than 10,000 on my computer (they aren’t all active). Now since I wouldn’t have any reference point as to how your document should look, I wouldn’t know whether the image you sent me looks the same on my computer as it does on yours. (We always send a proof for your confirmation just to be sure).

However there is a very easy solution. You embed the font into your Word document so the font information is contained in your file. This is actually quite easy to do. You would do this while you are working in Word. This example was done in Word 2003.

How to Embed True Type Fonts into a Word Document:

1. On the toolbar at the top select the Tools menu
2. Click Options

3.  Then click the Save tab

4.  Select the Embed TrueType fonts check box. Leave the “Embed characters in use only” and “Do not embed common system fonts” unchecked

5. Then click OK

6. Save the document.

Your document will now show up looking the same on any computer.

When we begin your tshirt printing project, it is crucial that we place your images correctly on the shirt so that they look their best. This is particularly important when we are placing an image on the left chest area. I’m sure you’ve seen T-shirts where the image is placed almost under the arm. We make sure that doesn’t happen.

Tshirt Printing Across the Chest

Our maximum tshirt printing area is 10.5″ x 8″. When we line this up on the T-shirt the top of the image is normally about 3 inches below the bottom of the collar hem.

This is determined by centering the image and also viewing where the line across the bottom of the sleeves would intersect. The image is centered so that the top two thirds of the image is above that imaginary line and the bottom third is below.

Printing In the Left Chest Area

This is somewhat trickier if you don’t know the system. At Tshirts Canada we have a procedure and guidelines that we follow.  The correct placement of an image or graphic in the left chest area, is that the center of the image is directly below the collar hem at the top of the shirt and either sitting on the line from the bottom of the sleeves or slightly above it.

Now naturally different images are going to display differently on the T-shirts so one thing that we do is we put a T-shirt on a mannequin or a person, place the image and then evaluate that printing position by measuring. We do not just eyeball it – simply because we want all of the shirts to look consistent.

Creating a Template for Your Tshirt Printing

Once we have determined the optimal position for your logo,  we create and print a tshirt printing template on cardstock. We cut out the image so that we can place the transfer into the hole. This allows us to lay the template on top of the shirt, place a transfer through the hole directly onto the shirt, line the transfer up, hold the transfer in place while removing the cardstock template  and then pressing  the shirt. This way the tshirt printing is on straight and the shirts look great!

Tshirt Printing On The Back Of The Shirt

When doing the tshirt printing on the back, the same general guidelines apply as for the front. So again, this means centering on the shirt with two thirds of the image being above the line that would intersect the bottom of each sleeve and the other third below the line. Now there are times when the image sits on that line because it’s all about how it visually looks. There are also times when we will shift the transfer up so that the tshirt printing remains balanced looking.

Printed Just Below the Collar

Frequently we are asked to print a smaller  image directly below the collar. Due to the nature of our tshirt printing operation the image must be about 4 inches below the bottom of the collar since when the T-shirt is laid flat on our heat press, the hem of the collar on the front is lower than the hem on the back. So to maintain a flat printing surface we must be below that.

By us taking a little time to make sure everything is lined up properly your printed T-shirts will arrive looking great!

Naturally we can also print on different areas of the shirt such as the sleeves and down at the bottom hem or off to the side, but this should give you an idea how we go about lining up your tshirt printing.

This is why we ask for photos or graphic designs to be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). It is also helpful when we know the name of the font or fonts that you’re using in your t-shirt design.

Now we do understand that this is not always possible. In many cases we are able to manipulate your photos and artwork for your t-shirt design to sharpen and clean it up for you.

What is 300 dpi?

When you look closely at a photograph in a newspaper you’ll see that it is actually composed of dots. The same is true of a photo taken by a digital camera and saved as a bitmap (a jpeg, bmp or tiff is a bitmap). It is actually composed of tiny squares with different colors.

So when there is a reference to resolution, it is referring to how many dots (squares) there are per square inch, hence dpi. The more dots there are per square inch, the sharper and clearer the image and the better your t-shirt design will print. Each dot can be a different colour.

On the Internet the normal resolution is 72 dpi. The higher the dpi, the larger the file. So a file that is 300 dpi requires more memory than a file that is 72 dpi.

When we print custom tshirts at T-shirts Canada we want to have 300 dpi at the full size of the printed image. This gives your t-shirt design more detail and the results are clear graphics.

If you send us a photograph with a resolution of 150 dpi, we’ll put it in a program and increase it to 300 dpi.

But if your image resolution is too low we will be unable to adjust your image and therefore that image would be unusable in your t-shirt design.

One other point to mention is when an image transitions from one colour to another it is referred to as anti-aliasing. So for example to go from black to white, the outer edge of the image would be black, then dark grey, then mid grey, then light grey, then white. In photos this creates a smoother image. However for graphic design it is better to go directly from black to white. This is created using a vector format.

Converting Your T-shirt Design to Vector

There is another type of file used for saving artwork. This type is vector. What this means is rather than using dots the image is calculated based on formulas using lines and curves.

This process results in very smooth looking artwork and fonts however it doesn’t work for photographs.

Professional programs such as CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator are vector-based programs and have the ability to produce an excellent t-shirt design.

We use CorelDraw. CorelDraw has an application that will convert bitmaps to vector. This program does an admirable conversion most of the time.

When we are able to convert your artwork to vector, we do. You won’t see the difference at all because we don’t send you a comparison, but it ensures that you artwork on your custom printed t-shirts prints great.

Including Your Fonts with Your T-shirt Design

When you send us your artwork, please include the names of any fonts you used. Many times what we do is recreate your artwork converting it to vector when possible.

Cropping Your Photograph

When working with photographs it is usually best if you send us the original photograph with instructions for cropping. For example you might send the full photograph and say that for the t-shirt design you want just the person’s head in the photo with most of the background removed.

This usually gives us a higher resolution and subsequently a better looking t-shirt design.

Adding Text to Your Photograph or Artwork for Your Custom Printed T-shirts

It is actually a very simple procedure for us to add text to your photograph or artwork. If it is a photograph and you would like to also include some printing on the photograph we can easily do that. If you have a particular font in mind for your t-shirt design let us know.

You also may have some artwork such as a business logo or graphic and you might like us to add your website address and phone number. Again this is very easy for us to do.

We Can Work With Your T-shirt Design Suggestions

So in conclusion I would like to say if your t-shirt design artwork is already done, we can print it.

If you have part of your artwork ready such as a photo or a partial t-shirt design and you would like us to add to it (phone number, website or any additional text) we can do that for you.

Or if you would like us to create a complete t-shirt design for you just send us your suggestions and will put it together for you.

Before printing anything we send a mock-up to give you an idea how the shirts would look. If it needs to be tweaked we’ll do that and send a new mock-up.
